    photographs are generally composed of dyes which can be faded by three environmental forces:

    1. Moisture, as dyes are water-soluble

    2. Ultra-violet radiation, where a molecule of dye becomes excited and 'grabs' a nearby hydrogen, causing a reduction reaction

    3. Exposure to oxygen (and light), where the dye molecule becomes excited by light, then binds to ambient oxygen molecules. Fading results from the reaction since the oxidized form is colourless.
