Historically correct colourisation
At Photo Fantastic Restorations, I specialise in historical colourisations and photo restorations. This intricate process requires extensive research to accurately identify the correct colours of historical transport, aircraft, military uniforms, medals, and period-specific clothing.
To ensure authenticity, each photograph is carefully researched. For example, I often source colour references from museum archives and verified historical materials.
In addition, I use advanced tools such as a Lab Portable Colourimeter High Precise Photo Digital Spectrophotometer to gather precise colour data from physical artefacts. As a result, every image is recreated with the highest degree of historical accuracy and authenticity.
The process can be time-consuming, as it demands thorough research and a high level of attention to detail. Because each project is unique, pricing is determined by the subject matter and the number of items or objects requiring accurate identification.
Importantly, all research is fully documented and included as part of the Historical Colourisation and restoration service. Prices start from £350, with additional charges for travel and accommodation, if required.
I provide this lower-resolution print copy for reference purposes only. Your monitor or phone display settings, as well as your viewing angle, may affect how colours and tonal values appear on screen. As a result, the historically accurate image may look slightly different from the final printed version.
I carefully colour-correct every print to match swatch colours derived from verified research sources.
Please do not print or reproduce this image. We provide it strictly for reference use, and copyright restrictions protect it.
Sailor Malan Spitfire Photograph Research
HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHIC COLOURISATION & RESTORATION
I recreated this colourised photograph of Sailor Malan through extensive historical research to ensure the most accurate representation of the original colours. I consulted period reference photographs, studied relevant materials, and spoke directly with experts in military history and historical photography.
I then used these sources to apply authentic colours to every key element, preserving the integrity of this iconic image and maintaining its historical accuracy. This includes the RAF uniform, skin tones, Spitfire camouflage, cockpit seating, crowbar, headgear, life vest, fixings, and internal cockpit details.
Throughout this process, I gained a deeper appreciation for the history behind the image and learned a great deal along the way.
